Abstract: The improvement of the Cundall’s discrete element model is made on the basis of elasticity theory and is reported in this paper. Two constitutive models with linearly-varying stiffness and constant non-linear stiffness are proposed. The improved discrete element method is used in the calculation and analysis of the deformation and mechanical processes of granular media and satisfactory results are obtained.
