Shear strength of unsaturated soils is composed of three components: true cohesion, friction and suction strength. Their nature and characteristics are analysed. Based on series of tests, formulas on the reletionships between: (1) angle of internal friction and plastic index, (2) suction strength and swelling pressure, (3) swelling pressure and suction force are presented.
