    • The dynamic strengths and Young's moduli of sandstone and limestone are determined by using the SHPB method in this paper. The average strain rate is about 1×102 to 2×102/s. Some explainations and discussions in detail concerning the techniques of using this method are given. In order to understand the effect of strainrate static experiments(ε ×105/s) are also maxle. The average dynamic Young's modulus of the sandstone is 30% higher than its static one, while for the limestone it is 20% higher than its static. The average dynamic compressivc strength of the sandstone is 40% higher than its static one, but it is 30% higher than its static for the limestone. The experimental results also show that the fracture surfaces are always nearly perpendicular to its ending surfaces.
