Tensile and compressive strength tests on artifical frozen soft clay in Shanghai

  • Uniaxial compressive strength tests are conducted on three kinds of typical saturated frozen soft clay in Shanghai.Several rules are concluded: ① The compressive strength exponentially increases with the increase of strain rates.② The compressive strength linearly increases as with the decrease of temperature.③ The compressive strength of the saturated frozen soft clay with higher water content is higher than that of frozen soft clay with lower water content and the compressive strength with higher dry density is lower than that with lower dry density. The parameters of the exponential function concerning compressive strength, temperature and strain rate are obtained.Based on the indirect tension tests on frozen soft clay in the constant temperature, the influence of constant axial pressure and load rates on tension strength is analyzed. It can be concluded that the tension pressure is weakened with the increase of the axial pressure and confining pressure. The model parameters can be gained by simulating experimental data. The tension strength increases with the increase of the load rates.
