Model for dynamic residual strain behavior of rockfill materials

  • According to the collected dynamic test results of rockfill materials from many earth-rock dams in China, the dynamic residual strain characteristics of these soils are studied. The differences among the primary residual strain models by Shen Zhujiang, Zou Degao, Ling Hua, Zhu Sheng and Zhao Jianming as well as their limitations are analyzed. After that, a new model for residual strain of rockfill materials is proposed based on some collected test results. In this model, the residual shear strain and residual volumetric strain are a function of confining pressure and dynamic cyclic stress, while the residual shear strain is also affected by the static shear stress level. By analyzing the results, it is found that the simulated residual strain curves by the proposed model agree well with the test results under the same stress condition.
